Oil and Lube Change
Engine oil should be changed on a yearly or 100 hour, whichever comes first, schedule. Please use what your manufacturer suggests. You can also use a product like Mobil One synthetic.
Gear lube needs to be changed every year also. When you change your lower unit gear lube please inspect the old product for any milkiness or metal. If the oil is milky you are getting water intrustion. As long as there is no problem with the gearcase itself, then there are only a few places where water can come in. There are 2 seals that sit directly under the water pump, there are 2 seals on your prop shaft behind your prop and there are the drain and fill holes. The seals on the drain and fill holes should be changed every time you change your gear lube. These are crush seals and when they are installed they crush to form a seal. Reusing this product will not insure a good seal and these seals are too inexpensive to take that chance. Gear lube is always pumped from the bottom fill hole until it comes up and out of the upper hole. Use a toothpick to make sure the level is even with the upper hole. The reason the lube must be pumped in from the bottom is so that you do not get any air trapped in the lower unit.
If you have water intrusion then the lower unit needs to be resealed. This is a little more adavnced than doing a water pump but if you decide to reseal this yourself please let me know so I can direct you to a good tutorial.
